How to Update Your Driving Licence & DVLA Records

Once you have tackled the Passport Office, your next stop is the DVLA. For many of our customers, this is a relief: unlike the passport process, changing your name on your driving licence is often completely free. However, because the DVLA has moved so many services online, the process for a name change can be confusing because—surprisingly—it must still be done by post.

Here is your complete guide to updating your driving licence and vehicle records without getting a fine.

1. The Driving Licence (Photocard)

You cannot update your name on your driving licence online. Even though you can change your address on the GOV.UK website, a name change requires you to send physical documents to Swansea.

What You Need

  • Form D1: This is the "Application for a driving licence" form. You can order one online from GOV.UK (which takes a week to arrive) or pick one up instantly from most larger Post Offices.
  • Your Current Licence: You must surrender your old photocard. If you have an old-style paper licence, you must send that instead.
  • Your Deed Poll: The DVLA accepts unenrolled deed polls. You should send your original document.

To Pay or Not to Pay?

This is where you can save money.

  • Option A (Free): If you are happy with your current photo, simply fill out the D1 form, attach your deed poll and old licence, and send it off. The DVLA will issue a new card with your new name and old photo for £0.00.
  • Option B (£17.00): If you want a new photo to match your new identity, you must enclose a passport-style photo and a cheque or postal order for £17.00.

Note: If your current photo is due to expire (photocards last 10 years), you must pay the £17 renewal fee anyway.

2. The Vehicle Log Book (V5C)

This is the step most people forget. Changing your driving licence does not automatically update your car's registration. These are two separate departments within the DVLA.

Failing to update your V5C (log book) can result in a fine of up to £1,000.

How to Update It

Look at your V5C document. The process depends on which style of log book you have:

  • New Style: Write your new name in Section 6: "New Keeper or New Name Details."
  • Old Style: Write your new name in Section 3: "Change of Name or Address."

You then send the whole V5C to the DVLA (the address is on the form). Do not send your deed poll with the V5C—they take your word for it.

3. Direct Debit for Vehicle Tax

If you pay your vehicle tax (road tax) by Direct Debit, you need to contact the DVLA separately to update these details, as the name on the bank account must match. This is best done after you have updated your bank account.

Summary Checklist

Document Action Cost
Driving Licence Send Form D1 + Deed Poll Free (or £17 with photo)
Vehicle Log Book (V5C) Fill in Section 6 & Post Free
Vehicle Tax Call/Email DVLA Free

Conclusion

While it might seem archaic to use paper forms in a digital age, the DVLA process is straightforward once you have the D1 form in your hands. Remember to send your application via recorded delivery to keep your deed poll safe.
